As the disciples return from working miracles, they gather to tell Jesus all about it. Instead of dwelling on what they accomplished, Jesus points them to something they need more. They need to be alone with him. But as they set off a crowd gathers that craves miracles, and Jesus gives them exactly what they need: himself.

Do you find yourself hesitating to be a witness for Christ because you feel unprepared? If you do, you’re not alone. In this passage we are told of a group of rag-tag, unprepared disciples sent out without much of anything and instructed to be a witness for Christ. To make matters seemingly worse, stuck right in the middle of this passage is the account of the beheading of John the Baptist. What do they share in common? Discipleship is costly, and anyone who would follow Jesus must reckon with the fate of John the Baptist.

Sunday School Class on Prayer for the Month of May

A new Sunday school class will begin this Sunday (May 6) on Prayer and go through the end of May. The class will combine the Family class and the Book of Numbers class. It will meet in Room 112, where the Family class was meeting.

Spring Picnic is on!

The weather gave us a little scare, but the sky has cleared and the picnic is still on as planned.

Sunday, May 6th is the Cahaba Park Church Picnic at Lee’s Pine Tree Acres from 5:30-7:30pm.

Directions: Take Hwy 280E to the light at Hwy 119. Turn left and go through 1 stoplight. Lee’s Pine Tree Acres is the next driveway on the right.

New Administrative Assistant Hired

Patient Faith

Just one chapter earlier Jesus has calmed a storm by his very word, teaching the disciples something of faith. He has just healed a man with many demons, leaving a whole city in astonishment about his work, and now he has quite a following. And now Jesus and his disciples have come back over…back to all of the crowds. Remember the crowds? They throng around him, often pressing in on him. But not because they love him, but because they love to see him do things for them. And in the midst of the crowd, Mark tells us of two people: both come to Jesus wanting something, and both finding that for true faith they must have patience in the Savior.

Mark 5:1-20

The demoniac in Mark 5 is naked, broken shackles dangle from his wrists, and he lives among the tombs cutting himself. And merciful Jesus heals him. What does this have to do with us? I wonder if in looking at this passage, we might find ourselves closer to the man than we’d like.
The story is about chaos and creation out of chaos, one in which Mark would tell us, you, like this man, must receive the mercy of Christ.

Do Not Fear

Mark 4:35-41

The disciples haven’t been with Jesus long: they’re still getting used to Him so to speak: all of these healings, teaching in strange parables. But now it’s evening, and they get back to familiar territory: the boat and the water. But familiar territory becomes profoundly dangerous, and what they say in v. 41 Jesus frames the entire section, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” Who are you? And yet if we would but listen to Jesus, we would hear Him say, “Do not fear.”
